On Wednesday 7th March the Insurance Supper Club collaborated with Lloyd’s of London in their “Putting your future firsts” event to celebrate International Women’s Day 2018. The theme of the afternoon was to encourage attendees to be a “first”.

The afternoon kicked off with a short presentation by Anita Corbin, the woman behind this “first” movement. Anita, always passionate about the advancement of women, spent the last 10 years developing an archive of 100 women who were the first in their field, and hence developed First Women UK. As this year marks a century since some women in the UK got the right to vote, her work will be exhibited through July and August this summer at the Royal College of Art. Anita gave those that attended an exclusive preview of her collection before it launches later this year.

Dame Inga Beale, a First Women herself, was then joined by four other “firsts”:

Charlotte Edwards – Former England cricket captain

Miles Hilton-Barber – First person to climb Mt Everest and cross the Sahara desert blind

Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin – Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons and fellow First Woman

Ola Jacob-Raji – co-founder of the Next Generation Insurance Network

The panellists spoke about what made them strive to be the first in their field, what gave them the courage and drive to do it and highlighted some of the barriers they had to overcome in order to achieve it.

ISC members were invited to join the event to be visible mentors for the networking session afterwards. Having so many accomplished leaders in the room providing advice and inspiration to our young talent was such an important part of the afternoon. As a role model, the ISC members presence and unique perspective was hugely valued by the more than 200 women (and a few men) who joined us for the event.

We were also joined by more 400 people who tuned in to the live broadcast stream and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.  Many guests said how inspired and motivated they were to get going on their career and life goals after listening to the unique perspectives of our panellists and ISC mentors.

We very much enjoyed partnering with Lloyd’s of London on this event.
